Rajah & Tann Singapore’s Rebecca Chew and Tan Shijie clinch Euromoney women awards

Two partners from Rajah & Tann Singapore have been recognised at the Euromoney Legal Media Asia Women in Business Law Awards 2017, a prestigious event that celebrates the advancement of women in the legal profession throughout the region.

Deputy Managing Partner Rebecca Chew won the Best in Dispute Resolution Award, beating seven other lawyers, while partner Tan Shijie vied with six others to clinch the Best in Real Estate Award. Rajah & Tann Singapore is the only local firm with two of its female partners receiving individual awards that celebrate their achievements in their areas of practice.

Receiving her award at the JW Marriott in Hong Kong last night, Ms Chew said: “Shijie and I are honoured with this recognition from Euromoney. These awards highlight an important and significant part women play in the legal profession. In Singapore, it is encouraging to see more women holding key positions in law firms as well as holding key appointments both in the private and public sectors. I hope that women will continue to use our own brand of leadership and skills to enhance the development of legal professionals.”

Ms Chew is the first woman to assume the position of deputy managing partner of the firm.  She has practised litigation in the firm for over two decades and has acted as lead counsel in several notable landmark cases, including the first decision of the Singapore High Court to recognise and enforce a Chinese Intermediate Court decision in Singapore. This decision had a far-reaching impact in the Chinese Courts that recognise the principle of reciprocity. Relying on this Singapore landmark decision, a Chinese Intermediate Court agreed to recognise and enforce a Singapore High Court judgment in China. Ms Chew is effectively bi-lingual and is well-known as a skilful advocate with the ability to manage complex cases.

Ms Tan, a partner in Rajah & Tann Singapore’s Corporate Real Estate practice, has experience in real estate acquisitions and divestments, real estate financing, and en bloc purchase of strata titled developments. She recently advised a subsidiary of Hind Group in the sale of Naumi Liora Hotel comprising10 conservation shophouses along Keong Saik Road, as well as represented Chua Chuan Leong Investments Holdings in the sale of conservation shophouses at the Boat Quay Conservation Area. She has been recognised by Asian Legal Business as one of 40 outstanding legal professionals in the region under the age of 40 in October 2017 and by the Singapore Business Review as one of Singapore’s 40 most influential lawyers aged 40 and under in 2015.
