Rajah & Tann Singapore appoints Rebecca Chew as Deputy Managing Partner
Rebecca will support Patrick Ang, who is also Deputy Managing Partner and Vice Chairman of Rajah & Tann Asia’s Regional Management Council. She will oversee Rajah & Tann Singapore’s operations, leaving Patrick to spend more time on the firm’s fast-growing regional network through Rajah & Tann Asia.
Managing Partner Lee Eng Beng, SC, said: “Rebecca is a veteran at Rajah & Tann Singapore having been with the firm for more than two decades. She knows the workings of the firm more than most and is highly esteemed for her ability to get the job done. She will definitely take some of the load off Patrick at a time when Rajah & Tann Asia is making much headway in regional markets.”
With around 600 lawyers, Rajah & Tann Asia is one of Asia’s largest legal networks with offices in nine countries; Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Rajah & Tann’s regional practice has been growing at double-digit rate in recent years, and now contributes almost a quarter of Rajah & Tann Singapore’s revenue, from single digit five years ago.
Rebecca first joined Rajah & Tann Singapore in 1992 as a junior lawyer focusing on contentious court work. She was appointed partner three years later, focusing on banking and commercial litigation and working alongside many prominent financial institutions. In 2009, she was asked to take on a larger role in the management of the firm in charge of human resources, in addition to her role as a senior litigator in the firm.
Rebecca’s experience also covers other areas of the law including disciplinary proceedings for healthcare professionals and medical malpractice. Rebecca is effectively bilingual and fluency in Mandarin helped her to establish an entrenched practice advising Chinese enterprises including Chinese banks and healthcare boards particularly the Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners Board. Some of her notable cases involve representing Chinese enterprises.
Rebecca said: “I look forward to supporting Eng Beng and Patrick to firmly establish Rajah & Tann as the premier legal practice in the region. In this challenging market, the legal profession needs to innovate to achieve greater returns. We hope to change mindsets and find better and more efficient ways of delivering cutting edge legal service.”
“At Rajah & Tann, we also take seriously our ongoing task of grooming the next generation of leaders who will be as remarkable for the quality of their counsel as the earlier generations.”
Together with Eng Beng and Patrick, Rebecca said her immediate priorities include providing a better framework for internal growth, grooming the next generation of leaders as well as optimising efficiency in day-to-day work with the use of technology. She will also support Patrick in his regionalisation efforts.
