Christopher & Lee Ong strengthens its White Collar Crime & Investigations Practice

Christopher & Lee Ong (“CLO”), a member firm of Rajah & Tann Asia, strengthens its White Collar Crime & Investigations Practice with the addition of new partner, Shanti Geoffrey. She brings to her new role more than 25 years of experience in the field of investigations, regulation, and enforcement of laws relating to securities.

Shanti’s admission to the partnership of CLO is timely as Malaysian regulators step up their efforts in curbing white collar crime with concomitant efforts by Malaysian corporations to ensure compliance with the regulatory framework governing their operations.

Shanti will co-head the White Collar Crime & Investigations Practice Group with John Mathew, CLO’s Head of Dispute Resolution. Her previous role as Head of Prosecutions & Civil Enforcement with the Securities Commission will enable her to play a vital role in offering clients both advice and representation before the Courts on different aspects of regulatory compliance and enforcement – this will include matters involving possible accounting and corporate fraud, criminal breach of trust, market manipulation, insider trading, and corruption.

Shanti will also be working closely with our partners in the Ethics and Integrity Practice Group as well as our Corporate Regulatory and Compliance Practice Group to achieve optimum outcomes for our clients.

Managing Partner, Yon See Ting, said, “We are elated to have Shanti join our team. Our corporate clients will greatly benefit from her in-depth knowledge of securities law and her invaluable regulatory experience in investigations and enforcement, including on high profile and complex cases, in both civil and criminal matters. Corporations will prize her knowledge and experience to help them avoid facing reputational risks and to overcome the unique commercial challenges that arise in cases in this practice area.

Shanti comes into her new role having served with the Securities Commission in various roles where she helped formulate and lead law reforms, policy initiatives, and corporate governance reforms. She also represented the regulator on matters relating to the capital market before the Malaysian Courts, including dealing with issues relating to criminal procedure and the Federal Constitution. She was part of the core team involved in the drafting of the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007, the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001, and related guidelines for capital market intermediaries.

Shanti is a most welcome addition to our Firm – her hands-on experience in securities regulatory and enforcement matters will enable CLO to better serve its range of clients and reinforces CLO’s goal of being a full service corporate – commercial law firm”, said John Mathew.

Shanti commented on her new role, saying, “The need for compliance with the capital market laws and rules, anti-money laundering and anti-corruption laws consistently presents us with new opportunities to assist companies in dealing with the risks and challenges in this area. I am excited to join the dynamic team at CLO and am looking forward to building this practice group.”

CLO is pleased to strengthen its White Collar Crime & Investigations Practice in tandem with, and in support of, Malaysia’s move towards promoting a culture of better corporate governance.

Rajah & Tann partners Showsuite to digitise legal documentation for sales of properties

Rajah & Tann Singapore (R&T) has signed a contract with Singapore-based property-tech company, Showsuite, to digitise the voluminous amount of legal documentation that comes with real estate transactions.

Under the agreement, Showsuite’s digital platform will streamline and automate back-end work processes and digitize legal documentation associated with the sales of new homes by property developer clients.

Showsuite is a pioneer in the field of digitisation of transactions of new homes for property developers connecting them with their property agents, lawyers and architects. Over S$4 billion worth of new homes in Singapore have been transacted on Showsuite’s digital booking platform since its launch in 2018. Its clients include GuocoLand, Hong Leong, CEL Development, Heeton Holdings & TID Development, amongst others.

Mr Norman Ho, Senior Partner, Corporate Real Estate at Rajah & Tann said: “Our collaboration with Showsuite will allow us to further harness the power of legal technology at Rajah & Tann and help us to streamline the work processes of our development projects into a more structured workflow. Not only will this bring about greater efficiency in delivering legal services to the developers, but it also cements our commitment to a sustainability focused legal practice.”

Mr Karamjit Singh, Chief Executive Officer of Showsuite said, “As we began to digitize transactions for property developers with our solutions, it has become very apparent to us of the importance of having the whole eco-system on board in order to harness technology’s full potential. We have since enhanced our platform that allows property agents to transact efficiently, in real-time, paperless-ly and remotely, which is vital in a post-Covid world. The agreement now with Rajah & Tann marks the start of a new milestone for Showsuite as we extend our technological offerings to law firms involved in the new home sales network.”

Christopher & Lee Ong strengthens its Restructuring & Insolvency Practice

Christopher & Lee Ong (“ "CLO"”), a member firm of Rajah & Tann Asia, strengthens its Restructuring & Insolvency Practice with the addition of new partner, Chua See Hua. She brings with her extensive legal experience in Restructuring & Insolvency, and a wide-ranging roster of local and international clients.

See Hua joins the Firm at a time when the Southeast Asian region, especially in Malaysia, sees an increase in debt restructuring and insolvency affecting multiple industries due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. She will co-head the Restructuring & Insolvency Practice Group and play a pivotal role in expanding the practice alongside the Firm’s Head of Dispute Resolution, John Mathew.

Managing Partner, Yon See Ting, said: “We are delighted to have See Hua join us as she brings to our established Restructuring & Insolvency practice, a very experienced pair of hands who will bring great value to our clients with her pragmatic and professional approach for which See Hua is known for.”

See Hua has led a number of notable deals, from the Asian financial crisis to the 2008 global financial crisis, where she advised and worked with borrowers, lenders and administrators on the corporate debt restructuring of huge portfolios of Malaysian public listed groups. Her practice extends to advising major corporations on transactions involving acquisitions and divestments of companies (both public and private), banking, property-related issues, private equity investments, and capital markets.

“See Hua’s experience in restructuring and insolvency will add width and depth to our capabilities,” said John Mathew, the Head of Dispute Resolution practice in CLO.

Commenting on her new role, See Hua said: “I am delighted to join a dynamic and forward looking firm and to be working with colleagues who share similar values, commitment and passion for the practice.”

See Hua's team joins CLO from Chua Associates, a boutique law firm specialising in Restructuring & Insolvency, which See Hua founded in 2010.

See Hua and her team coming on board at this juncture is opportune as not only will this add tremendous value to both CLO’s clients but also the Firm’s Restructuring & Insolvency practice at a time when Malaysia and the region’s economies require advice and insights on this area of law.
