Rajah & Tann Asia Sweeps Five Accolades at Asialaw Dispute Resolution Awards

Rajah & Tann Asia was awarded five accolades at the third annual Asialaw Dispute Resolution Awards 2017 held in Hong Kong last night. Collectively, its member firms took home the most number of awards.

Indonesia member firm, Assegaf Hamzah & Partners, won the Indonesia National Law Firm of the Year award while Rajah & Tann Singapore was named Domestic Arbitration Firm of the Year and Labour & Employment Law Firm of the Year. The firm also clinched the International Deal of the Year for its involvement in Pacific Andes’ $1.5 billion liquidation. In addition, Ben Dominic Yap, a partner at Philippine member firm, Gatmaytan Yap Patacsil Gutierrez & Protacio (C&G Law), won the Philippines Disputes Star of the Year.

Chairman of Rajah & Tann Asia Lee Eng Beng, Senior Counsel, said: “Rajah & Tann Asia is deeply honoured that its member firms have been recognised for their premier service to clients across the region. We will work even harder to provide smooth and seamless legal advice and support to clients with cross-border businesses and transactions in South East Asia.”

Assegaf Hamzah & Partners, one of Indonesia’s largest law firms, also clinched the National Law Firm of the Year award last year. The firm has consistently been lauded as a top-tier firm in legal rankings by Chambers Asia Pacific as well as The Legal 500 – Asia Pacific.

Rajah & Tann Singapore’s International Arbitration Practice has the largest portfolio of work of any Asian law firm with over 100 ongoing matters. The firm also won the Domestic Arbitration Firm of the Year award in 2016.

Rajah & Tann Singapore’s Employment & Benefits Practice advises clients on a wide range of matters, including cross-border employment policies, designing new compensation plans, and acting to resolve potentially expensive disputes.  Rajah & Tann Singapore was also nominated for national law firm of the year as well as a finalist for best firm in the following practice areas: insolvency, insurance, shipping & maritime, and tax.

Philippines Disputes Star of the Year, Mr Yap, has significant experience in international and domestic arbitration dealing with commercial, construction and labour disputes, and is recognised as a leading Philippine lawyer in the dispute resolution field by Chambers Asia-Pacific, the Global Arbitration Review and The Legal 500 – Asia Pacific. He headed the firm’s team that acted as counsel for a leading Philippine geothermal power generation company in a multimillion dollar International Chamber of Commerce arbitration (including emergency arbitrator proceedings) in Singapore and related court proceedings in the Philippines, Singapore and England against a multinational contractor. He has also handled and tried a broad range of cases involving contract disputes, corporate restructuring and rehabilitation, debt recovery, enforcement of foreign judgments and arbitral awards, family law, infrastructure and engineering disputes, intra-corporate controversies, labour disputes, medical malpractice claims, product liability and tort.

Asialaw is a research house based in Hong Kong and its awards celebrate the foremost leaders in 13 practice areas across 14 jurisdictions in the region. The awards build on Asialaw's expertise in uncovering leading lawyers and firms in the Asia-Pacific region with individual award winners named for each country.
