Ibrahim is currently the Managing Partner of Assegaf Hamzah & Partners, having joined the firm in 2009. He earlier served as director of an Indonesian online legal publisher, and as an associate at another leading Jakarta law firm, where he focused his practice on General Corporate M&A, Capital Markets, Banking & Finance, and Debt Restructuring. 

Currently a member of the firm’s general corporate practice, he represents both domestic and international financial institutions in drafting or advising on corporate and government financing and security documents. In addition, he has advised and represented clients in relation to a number of significant insolvency / debt-restructuring issues.

With an undergraduate degree in law from the University of Indonesia (1997), he spent time as a visiting research fellow at Harvard Law School’s East Asian Legal Studies Program (2002-2003), before earning an LL.M in 2009 from the University of Melbourne, Australia, facilitated by an Australian Development Scholarship.

He has been involved in various law reform initiates in Indonesia, including advising the Indonesian Supreme Court’s Judicial Reform Committee, as well as working on a law-reform project funded by the Australian Government. In 2005, he was presented with an Asia Foundation 50th Anniversary Award in recognition of his contribution to legal reform in Indonesia.

Ibrahim has penned a number of papers and articles on law-related topics, some of which have appeared in compilations, journals and other publications, both domestic and international. He serves on the boards of a number of foundations, including Reefcheck Indonesia, the Indonesian Legal Research Foundation (Yayasan Studi Hukum Indonesia), and PT Justika Siar Publika (owner and operator of Indonesian online legal publisher www.hukumonline.com).

Ibrahim has been named a “Leading Lawyer” in Capital Markets, M&A, Banking, and Restructuring & Insolvency by the International Financial Law Review (IFLR), and is recognized by Chambers Asia Pacific (2014) as a “Leading Individual” in Banking & Finance. He is also an Asialaw Profiles “Recommended Individual”.

Experience
  • Counsel to shareholders in several share sales involving Indonesian listed banks, including the sale of founding shareholders’ shares in PT Bank Saudara Tbk (2010-2012);
  • Advising International Finance Corporation and FMO, the Dutch Development Bank, in several Indonesian financings (2010-2011);
  • Advising international private equity companies in investing in or financing Indonesian borrowers and acquisitions of stakes in Indonesian transportation and mining companies (2010-2012);
  • Represented the Indonesian Depositary Insurance Corporation (Lembaga Penjamin Simpanan) on various legal issues pertaining to ailing banks, and the divestment of PT Bank Mutiara Tbk (2009-start 2014).
  • Represented a global online payment firm in exploring the possibility of establishing an Indonesian operation (2012);
  • Represented PT Indonesia Infrastructure Finance in developing standard loan documents and in several financings for Indonesian infrastructure projects (2012);
  • Advising foreign contractors in Indonesian on oil & gas projects  (2012);
  • Represented foreign investment concession holder in amending water concession agreement (2012);
  • Advising foreign international EPC contractors on Indonesian power plant tenders and projects (2012);
  • Counsel to a number of international apparel brands in establishing Indonesian distributorships (2011-2012);
  • Represented Garuda Indonesia in its USD 382.8 million global offering of 6,335,738,000 shares in reliance on Rule 144A/Reg. S, a mandate that helped cement AHP’s dominance in high-profile privatizations of state enterprises (2010-2011);
  • Advising Indonesian oil & gas contractor in global offering in reliance on 144A/Reg S to be listed in the Toronto Stock Exchange (2010-2011);
  • Advising PT Tower Bersama Tbk in its USD 207 million global public offering in reliance of Reg S/Rule 144A, marking the first global offering/IPO by an Indonesian telecommunications tower company (2010);
  • Advising Berau Coal on its USD 152.3 million global IPO in reliance on Rule 144A/Reg. S – the company is one of the largest coal mining companies in Indonesia (2010); and
  • Represented several oil palm plantation and palm oil processing companies in their internal corporate restructuring and global offering in reliance on Rule 144A/Reg. S (2012).
