News Alert: The Malaysian Parliament Passes the Personal Data Protection (Amendment) Bill

On 31 July 2024, the Senate (or Dewan Negara) approved the Personal Data Protection (Amendment) Bill 2024 (“Amendment Bill“), which was introduced by the Digital Minister Gobind Singh earlier in July.

With approval from both houses of Parliament (i.e. the House of Representatives and the Senate), the Amendment Bill is now awaiting royal assent and publication in the Federal Gazette before it can come into effect.

Businesses should stay informed about developments regarding the implementation timeline of the Amendment Bill, as well as the forthcoming suite of guidelines being developed by the Malaysian Government to complement the changes introduced by the Amendment Bill.
