Beyond Compliance: Adapting to the New Era of Consumer Protection in Singapore

On 16 September 2025, the Competition & Antitrust and Trade Practice organised a seminar titled “Beyond Compliance: Adapting to the New Era of Consumer Protection in Singapore”.

The Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (“CCS“) has stepped up its efforts to tackle unfair trade practices that violate the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act 2003. Aside from cracking down on misleading claims and aggressive sales behaviour, CCS now wields new responsibilities for product safety and legal metrology, expanding the risk map for businesses operating within Singapore. The seminar distilled the practical lessons from the recent CCS investigations and enforcement efforts, court actions and policy shifts in relation to consumer protection over the past six months. Through an interactive discussion of real-world scenarios, the speakers explored how businesses can navigate the sharpened enforcement environment and embed sustainable compliance across different consumer touchpoints — online and offline. Topics covered at the session included the following:

  • spotting and eliminating “dark patterns” in digital interfaces, a priority enforcement area identified by CCCS;
  • maintaining the integrity of customer reviews in an artificial intelligence (AI) age;
  • designing sales processes that protect vulnerable consumers;
  • understanding personal liability for directors and managers; and
  • building a proactive remediation plan via voluntary undertakings, corrective notices and refund mechanisms.

Kala Anandarajah, BBM, Head of the Competition and Antitrust and Trade Practice, and Partner Tanya Tang from the same Practice were the speakers.
