Tian Hui is a Partner in the firm’s China-Related Investment Dispute Resolution Practice, and regularly acts and advises in a range of civil litigation matters involving Chinese stakeholders.

Tian Hui is effectively bilingual in English and Mandarin, and has developed a practice focused on commercial disputes involving Chinese stakeholders. In 2020, Tian Hui was selected by the firm to participate in the first run of the China Ready Programme launched by the Ministry of Law, which was specially tailored for legal professionals who work regularly with Chinese companies and law firms.

In 2022, Tian Hui was emplaced on the Young Amicus Curiae Scheme of the Supreme Court of Singapore, where she had the opportunity to assist the Court in cases involving novel or cutting-edge issues of law. She was appointed young amicus curiae in the High Court decision of MTM Ship Management Pte Ltd v Devaswarupa and others [2022] SGHC 178, and was commended by the learned Judge for her “detailed and helpful research and submissions”.

Tian Hui graduated with First Class Honours from the University of Bristol in 2014 and obtained the B.C.L. from the University of Oxford in 2015. She was called to the Singapore Bar in 2017, and was awarded the Prize for Best Performing Candidate at the Part A Bar Examinations.

Notable Cases & Transactions

  • Acted in appeals to the Court of Appeal, reported as Lim Siau Hing @ Lim Kim Hoe and another v Compass Consulting Pte Ltd and another appeal [2023] SGCA 39. The appeals arose out of an agreement between our clients and the counterparty for services provided in connection with a reverse takeover transaction, and our clients prevailed in both appeals.
  • Emplaced under the Supreme Court’s Young Amicus Curiae Scheme 2022 and was appointed as young amicus curiae in a Tribunal appeal which involved novel issues in relation to the Work Injury Compensation Act. The decision was reported as MTM Ship Management Pte Ltd v Devaswarupa and others [2022] SGHC 178.
  • Acted in an appeal to the Court of Appeal, reported as Kiri Industries Ltd v Senda International Capital Ltd and another [2022] SGCA(I) 5. The appeal arose out of a joint venture dispute between a client listed in the PRC and an Indian listed entity, with a sum of about US$2 billion in dispute, and involved complex issues relating to valuation methodology. 
  • Acted in an appeal to the Court of Appeal, reported as Yihua Lifestyle Technology Co, Ltd and another v HTL International Holdings Pte Ltd and others [2021] 2 SLR 1141. The appeal related to the issue of whether a judicial manager’s decision was unfairly prejudicial to the interests of a company’s creditors or members. The opposing parties were incorporated in the PRC and Hong Kong.
  • Acted in an appeal to the Court of Appeal, reported as Golden Hill Capital Pte Ltd and others v Yihua Lifestyle Technology Co, Ltd and another [2021] 2 SLR 1113, involving whether our clients, having participated in proceedings in the Court below, should be allowed to participate in appeal proceedings. The opposing parties were incorporated in the PRC and Hong Kong.
  • Acted in the trial of a dispute involving fraudulent trading and conspiracy, acting for the judicial managers of a Singapore holding company which had significant assets and operations in the PRC, reported as Tendcare Medical Group Holdings Pte Ltd (in judicial management) and another v Gong Ruizhong and others [2021] SGHC 80.
  • Acted in a High Court suit involving allegations of conspiracy and fraudulent misrepresentation against our clients arising out of the judicial management of a Singapore incorporated company. The plaintiffs were incorporated in the PRC and Hong Kong.
  • Acted in an arbitration before the Singapore International Arbitration Centre in relation to claims arising out of a dispute over a land sale and purchase agreement governed by Indonesian Law.
